An Average Typeface
Creating a parametrized typeface.
An Average Typeface is a typeface that is an average of every system font on a computer.
One of the central aspects of type is readability. As an experiment, this project is an average of all of a system's fonts together. The hypothesis is that it would reveal the most readable form of each letter by what each system font had in common. The program overlays each system font at 5% opacity in a browser, and reveals the most overlaid pattern between them. Some of the graphic experiments below explore the parametric placement of each font, such as by an increasing range of rotation and displacement.
